Wellness Wednesday: Dandelion Root Tea

How is it already halfway through the week? Summer days seem to go by so quickly, no? I’m excited about today’s post because I feel like it’s not only in reference to wellness but is also a fit tip. Who doesn’t want a skinny hack every now and then? I found dandelion root tea first out of curiosity and then again in a recipe for a detox tea. When I was in college a friend of mine who was French was always referring to how they grew up on dandelion greens and how they were full of nutrition. I thought this was a little out there at the time because the only exposure I had to dandelion anything was the weeds that my dad had me pulling out of our garden and lawn. Then I tried them in a salad and, if you’ve ever had them you will understand, I was very put off by their bitter flavor. Now my taste has become a little more accustomed to them and I try to incorporate them …

Fit Friday: 4 Simple Rules for a Successful Detox

Happy Friday friends! I took a day off (you may have noticed the absence of a Wellness Wednesday this week) and I feel like I’ve been gone forever. I’ve missed you all! I hope you had a fantastic Fourth of July full of fun and festivities. If you’ve been following along on Instagram or picking up on my subtle sign-off’s on here you know I’ve been doing a bit of traveling. I was fortunate enough to go back East to see my family and then take a family trip to Greece. I plan on doing a full recap here so stay tuned! After traveling one of the first things I do (besides laundry) is get a plan in place for a little detoxing. I don’t mean signing up for an extreme juice cleanse or scampering around for things to undo the “damage” I did while I was away. Instead I look at it as a way to get back on track and feel better. I’m not sure if I’m alone in this, but there are …

Wellness Wednesday: Mo’ Beta-Carotene

Happy hump day friends! I’m not gonna lie, my energy levels have been LOW this week and I am chalking it up to the June gloom we are experiencing here in SoCal. I know this is the last place in the country where we should be complaining about the weather but it seems to be affecting people’s moods because it’s something we’re not used to. It’s amazing how the minute you start experiencing something other than the norm you realize how much a thing like weather or temperature can affect you. Needless to say I’ve been relying heavily on nutrient-dense foods to keep my energy levels up and also making a point to get outside regardless of the temperature or weather. When I was shopping for ingredients this week I noticed how I was reaching for all the bright things such as, purple cabbage, green spinach, orange sweet potatoes, and it got me thinking about what makes these foods so enticing. Sure the taste is one thing but the actual brilliance in each hue is …

Wellness Wednesday: Pearl-tastic Beauty

No longer reserved for classic necklaces and earrings, pearls are being utilized in a variety of interesting ways. While the notion of using this remarkable ingredient is nothing new (most things are cyclical if you think about it) it has been a popular ingredient used in health and wellness products lately. You can find pearls on the ingredient list of powders, supplements, beauty products and more. So what is it about pearls that would make us want to ingest them and spread all over our faces? Well let’s first delve into where they come from. Pearls are formed inside oysters as some sort of defense mechanism. In a very simple explanation, when the oyster detects a foreign particle inside it’s shell it secretes the same nacre substance used to form it’s shell to cover the particle and over time this creates a pearl. Pearls contain beneficial minerals including calcium, amino acids, protein and much more, all things that contribute to healthy, youthful looking skin. So it’s no wonder we think skin care and beauty when …

Motivation Monday: The Power of Music

Happy Monday everyone! The start of the week is a great opportunity to set some goals and add an intention to set the tone for your week. I was feeling a little overwhelmed on Saturday morning thinking of all the errands, homework, research, laundry, etc. I was trying to accomplish before I was due to my Pilates studio lesson. I knew I would be in class for 5 hours so I was trying to make the morning as productive as possible. I noticed my anxiousness and in result tried to slow down and see what I could do to prioritize what needed to be done first. I sat down, made a list beginning with the tasks that were time sensitive. Once everything was on paper, I began to feel a little better. Next I made myself a nutritional breakfast knowing the day I had ahead and all the energy I needed to power me through the day. Lastly, I turned on our speaker in the kitchen and BLASTED my favorite playlist. Before long my list …

Wellness Wednesday: Trippin’ On Shrooms

Mushrooms are having a moment in the health and wellness industry. No longer are they categorized as just fancy infused oils, pizza toppings or for psychedelic trips, they are impacting wellness in a major way. Mushrooms are a good source of B vitamins, which help provide energy in the body by breaking down proteins, fats, and carbs. Aside from vitamins, mushrooms are also high in important minerals including selenium (which works as an antioxidant) and potassium (which helps control blood pressure & support our muscles and organs). Below I’ve outlined some common forms being utilized today: Mushroom Coffee Benefits: made from wildly harvested chaga, the mushrooms blended with pure coffee combats common side affects from caffeine meaning no more jitters or crashes and supports the adrenals. Mushroom Tea Benefits: reishi mushrooms are made into tea which studies have shown positively affect the body in many ways including fighting inflammation, liver disease, heart disease, anxiety/depression, diabetes, viruses, digestive problems and much more. Mushroom Powder Benefits: there are multiple varieties to get in powder form but the cordyceps …

Wellness Wednesday: Cuckoo For Coconuts

Coconut oil has been all the rage. While the health benefits and versatility of what it can do are impressive, I feel like it’s been done…we know it’s amazing and we understand what it can do for us. Seeing it everywhere made me think of where it comes from and if in fact the fruit itself is as impressive as the oil and water we see lining the shelves. After reading all about the coconut fruit, I found it to be just as fascinating as the counterparts we know and love. So here it is, my list of benefits I found useful and interesting about the coconut as a whole. Top 5 Benefits of Coconuts Minerals-consuming a cup of shredded coconut gives us a high % of our daily recommended servings of minerals manganese, copper, selenium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc. Fiber-(this one surprised me) raw coconut is rich in dietary fiber! One cup of shredded coconut meat equals 7 grams of fiber which can help lower the LDL (bad) cholesterol in our bloodstream. Immunity boost-fats …
