Fit Friday: Treat-Yo-Self Superfood Cups

Happy Friday friends! Although I’m trying to get back into the healthy swing of things after our vacation, I still want to make sure I leave room for some decadence and have a treat when I have the craving. Instead of throwing it all out the window and giving into just any sweet treat I see, I make it a point to include a little nutrition so I’m not totally blowing it. In preparation for times like these, I like to make treats ahead that I can just grab when the urge strikes. I was looking through my refrigerator for some protein to include in my treat and came across pepitas (also known as pumpkin seeds). I bought these to throw on top of salads and oatmeal because they are filled with good for you protein, zinc, antioxidants and magnesium. I’m always on the lookout for magnesium because if you work out regularly your stores are most likely low and stress hormones increased (making it harder to recover and relax). So it’s very important to …

Fit Friday: Red, White and Blue Hummus

The strawberry and blueberry cake at Fourth of July BBQs has been played. If you’re looking for something to bring to your next festive gathering and want to boast your patriotic pride, I have an interesting spin on the classic trio. Hummus. Not many people dislike hummus and for good reason. It is filled with protein so keeps you full and satiated, has a creamy and pleasant texture, and is extremely versatile. What’s not to love? I thought it would be fun to include some simple recipes that would spice up your next gathering or impress the hostess with your creativity for their red white and blue themed party. Red, white, and blue hummus. I chose these varieties not only for their hue but for their impressive health benefits, why not take care of your fellow party goers with a snack filled with vitamins, protein and fiber? MSF Red Pepper Hummus Ingredients 1 ½ medium red bell peppers, sliced into quarters seeds removed 15 oz can organic chick peas, drained & rinsed (I used Trader …

Fit Friday: Light & Fit Guacamole

Happy Fridayyyy! Summer is officially here for me because I am on break and getting ready for some summer travel. Whenever I think of summer meals I go lighter. I’m not sure if it’s the heat that makes me want to eat this way or the idea that I’m going to be in a bathing suit, regardless I’m always looking for inventive ways to go leaner in these months. A staple side at every summer barbecue is hands down, guacamole. There is something about that rich green hue, satisfying creamy texture and how it’s the perfect accompaniment to those crispy tortilla chips or chopped veggies. While avocados are full of healthy fats and boast so many benefits (more here), some of us may be looking for an alternative if we just can’t resist polishing off the entire bowl (not so great for the waistline) or just had some avocado toast for breakfast so looking for a different route at lunch or snack time. Regardless the reason, I have the perfect lightened up alternative to feed …

Fit Friday: MSF Green Goddess Dressing

Happy June everybody! We are in the second day of June and for me that means it’s officially summer. Summer is all about days at the beach (don’t forget sunscreen!), watermelon flavored everything (watermelon margarita anyone?) and eating a lot more salads. Salads don’t need to be boring. They can actually be quite complex if you choose fresh, seasonal ingredients and mix up flavors, textures and of course use the right dressing. Lately I’ve been on a homemade dressing kick because, it’s really simple, I know exactly what is going in it (no hidden chemicals, preservatives, oils or sugar) and it tastes SO MUCH BETTER. If you are new to the homemade condiment game or just looking for a new recipe to cycle in this summer, I’ve got you covered. This is a simple, delicious recipe for my green goddess dressing that goes with anything from salads, quinoa bowls, dip for veggies or on top of steak and shrimp. I use fresh herbs not only for their amazing flavor but for the added nutritional benefits …

Fit Friday: Refreshingly Fit Watermelon-Rita

Helllooooo Friday, it’s so great to see you. Was there a full moon this week? Not sure if it’s just me or if you felt it too but there were some interesting vibes this week. Anyway, I’m happy to see the weekend on the horizon where I’ll be celebrating my little sis turning 25! And all the festiveness long weekends bring. As an ode to this summer-like weather we’ve been having, I wanted to include a light and refreshing cocktail to enjoy this weekend that is not only festive but also MSF approved. When I think of summer gatherings (especially outdoors in the sun in) my mind goes to margaritas. The only thing worse than a warm watered-down cocktail in the heat is one filled with nasty ingredients that you can’t pronounce and a week’s worth of sugar. This watermelon margarita will not only be too tasty to leave sitting for any length of time, it has ZERO added sugar and only natural ingredients (tequila is from nature, right?). As you may know by now, I’m a …

Fit Friday: Jump! Jump!

Happy Friday friends! I hope you’ve had a great week so far and have some fun things coming up this weekend. It is my last weekend of in-studio learning for Pilates teacher training, which is kind of unbelievable…it’s gone by so quickly! I’m looking forward to having a little less structure on the weekends and more time to practice teaching and observe classes. I’m thinking of doing a Pilates highlight each week with tips and tricks, what do you think?  I wanted to keep things straight to the point and simple for this fit Friday and I am super excited about this one! Jumping rope has always been a fun way to incorporate cardio into my circuit training or for a quick 10 minute warm up. You may or may not be impressed to know that I won first place in our grade school’s Jump Rope for Heart competition. I was the last one standing out of my entire grade…we can breeze over the fact that I only had 60 kids in my entire grade …
