Motivation Monday: Fathers, Modern Day Heroes

This Motivation Monday is dedicated to some pretty important people that motivate us to be our best selves. It’s Monday, the start to a fresh week and one where we get to pay homage to the modern day heroes in our lives, dads. Fathers, mentors, husbands, brothers, uncles, there are many forms of what a father can mean to someone and it is something that is unique to each person. We would be in a very different place if we didn’t have these special men in our lives. It’s crucial to have a solid figure you can turn to when faced with hard decisions or a tough circumstance for guidance and perspective. Teachers, mentors, public figures, neighbors, friends, and family there are numerous variations of who can take this role on in your life. I count my blessings when I think of who this figure is in my life because luckily enough all these descriptions mentor, teacher, family, someone I look up to is all wrapped up into one person, my Dad. He has done …

Fit Friday: MSF Peanut Butter Eggs

This weekend we are going to be home on the east coast with my side of the family. Easter was big in our house growing up and I have fond memories of Easter egg hunts, bunny-shaped goodies and the thoughtful Easter baskets Mom put together for us. One thing we could not get enough of in our house (my brothers especially) were the Reese’s peanut butter eggs that are only around this time of year. There is something about them shaped into an egg that just makes them taste different. Am I right? Once I began to get more into health and wellness, checking the ingredient lists of foods, I stopped eating treats like this because to be honest it was pretty scary what was in them (almost nothing real!). I decided a few years ago to have a go at re-creating these nostalgic treats because like us, my husband was a big fan growing up and we happened to be having a small west coast Easter that year. Having some peanut butter eggs would …

Fit Friday: Raise A Glass to 2016!

It’s actually here, the last few days of 2016 are upon us and a New year is on the horizon. I am a big fan of New Years. This could be due to the fact there is a high volume of sparkly things and corks of bubbly popping everywhere or because I love an excuse to reflect and reset. Either way I love it and look forward to it. Instead of mourning the loss of this past year and commenting on how fast it flew by, I like to relish in all that has happened and look forward to an even better year ahead. Don’t we do better once we pick up a few tricks along the way, learn from our mistakes and find what we really enjoy? I think it is common to be cautious of change and to fear the unknown- but if you look at change as exciting and a chance to make things even better, do more of what you like and make the changes you wish to make—I think change could …

Fit Friday: Cookie Swap

During the holidays you can count on an influx of sweets-especially cookies when going to parties, cookie exchanges and work gatherings. For me, the homemade variety is always worth the splurge in the calorie department-especially if it’s a family recipe that was passed down generation to generation or there is some other significance behind it. This time of year only comes around once a year after all! I also prefer homemade treats because there is a greater chance the ingredients are closer to whole or natural and have less nasty chemicals and unknowns in them than the store-bought variety. Whatever your preference, if you are looking to stay fit and healthy throughout the season it can be daunting to find something you can bring to one of these gatherings. Especially something that won’t derail your healthy eating habits and also hold it’s own in the yummy and taste department. Well I’m here to make it simply fit for you, so I present my two go-to cookie recipes that scream holiday festiveness and bring that wave …

Motivation Monday: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

This past weekend I was completely wrapped up in the spirit of the season, doing some holiday shopping, decorating our house and planning out the rest of the month and the festive events it entails. There are many reasons this time of year gets us in the spirit of giving back to those in need but I feel a large part of it can be attributed to all the gift giving we are doing amongst ourselves–and we wouldn’t feel right about indulging in this much cheer if not everyone was included. For me, giving back is not completely self-less. I gain much more from giving to others than I do from receiving. It may sound like an oxymoron but it’s actually something I am very passionate about. This inspired me to do a post to kick off this week and the holiday season with a list of easy ways to give back this time of year. Giving back feeds the spirit portion of your health and it may surprise you how amazing you feel physically, …

Fit Friday: HITT It

In keeping with the theme of preparation for the upcoming holiday season, I wanted to include something active for this Fit Friday that you can do anywhere. Whether we’re traveling or having company stay with us, our normal routines are affected and we can easily get derailed from our health and fitness goals. Instead of waiting for the guests to clear out or using the excuse of not having your typical gym nearby, I’ve included my go-to HITT workouts that I count on when I’m traveling or crunched for time when having guests stay. I even did this a few times a week in the hotel room/gym on my honeymoon 😉 I’ve included the workouts below, so if you’re read-up on HITT and don’t need the background, feel free to skip ahead. If not, I wanted to include some background on the type of exercise and why I believe it’s FITting for quick workouts when you want to burn more in less time. HITT stands for high intensity interval training and has gained popularity in group …

Fit Friday: 3 Ways To Get Back On Track Post Holiday

Lets be honest. We took a few too many fun-size candy bars out of the trick-or-treater’s candy bowl, indulged in a couple extra ghoulish cocktails, and gave in to the festive holiday baked goods in the lounge at work. Whatever your poison, it’s not uncommon to indulge a little around the holidays. The fact that we have these celebrations and do just that C E L E B R A T E once in a while should be just that, a celebration, an uncommon occurrence and we move on. I have to say letting go once in awhile from an otherwise pretty vanilla existence when it comes to my diet changes it up and gives me something to look forward to…and work off. Now comes the fun part, getting things back into gear and amping up the diet and exercise game because in just a few short weeks we are at it again, celebrating thanks and spending time with loved ones. So to get back on track I follow three simple things. 3 Simple Rules to Get …
